Kaleidoscope: A Heritage of Color

This 16-foot-tall by 40-foot long kaleidoscope of color and culture completed in 2007 is the backdrop to an active basketball court and brings to life five of Tampa’s early influential leaders. Commissioned by the City of Tampa Public Art Program, with input from community leaders and historians, the mural features Civil Rights activist and former NAACP Florida director from the late 1950s to mid 1960s Robert “Bob” Saunders; early 1900s women’s rights activist Luisa Capetillo; late 1800s poet and writer and the leader of the Cuban independence from Spain Jose Marti; Scottish immigrant and attorney who founded West Tampa (1892) Hugh Macfarlane, and the first Mayor of West Tampa in 1895, Fernando Figueredo. One Tribe, One Love

When Rialto Theatre owners Hope and George Donnelly discovered South African artist Bekky Beukes, they fell in love with her bold goddess-inspired figures and knew she was the artist they wanted to transform the blank rooftop wall above the theater into something special. Beukes took her inspiration from her native South Africa, along with Indian, Celtic, Spanish and Cuban symbols, blending cultures to create this gorgeous multicultural goddess with turquoise tresses gazing down from the rooftop, spreading her love and protection to all. Bold colors call for bold flavors, and you can find plenty of both to love in Tampa’s handcrafted art and craft beer.

Stay Curious

Location: William F. Poe Parking Garage, Adamo Drive, 800 N. Ashley Drive

Working with a team of eight assistants, artists Bask and Tes One used 175 gallons of paint to create a series of murals, including this giant wrap-around mural that transforms a drab, concrete parking garage in downtown Tampa’s Arts District into a landmark piece of art on its own. The artists added a call encouraging visitors to continue to learn and seek out new experiences. Doesn’t it just make you want to explore more? Tampa’s beer scene is just as vibrant as its murals, encouraging you to seek out the flavor that is just around the next corner.

Bern’s Steakhouse

Location: Bern’s Steakhouse, 1208 Howard Ave.

This rich tapestry of red and orange was commissioned in 2016 by CASS Contemporary Art Gallery and Bern\'s Steakhouse to commemorate the 60th anniversary of this iconic Tampa dining establishment. The artist incorporated some of Bern’s storied history with the face of founder Bern Laxer and the names of many of its longtime employees, along with inspiration from the restaurant’s ornate interior, intermingled with striking images of leaping Florida panthers and the heads of Greek and Roman gods Artemis—the goddess of the hunt—and Bacchus, the god of wine and agriculture. Eaton used more than 80 cans of spray paint to create the work of art, referencing a sketch he held while working spontaneously to create the soulful mural that is now part of the Bern’s story. Incorporate some of Tampa’s history into your soul with a flight of craft beers. Sip slowly, while you contemplate each one’s history.

For the Love of This City

This husband and wife team working under the moniker Illsol was commissioned by the Portico art initiative to brighten up their downtown campus. The artists incorporated elements of Tampa’s original neighborhoods with images of a rooster and two-headed alligator, along with native species like magnolia blossoms and giant egrets, to create a conversation piece that brings people together. The Myth of the Coppertail

This detailed under-the-sea study in greys and blues by the historic Ybor City brewery’s label artist celebrates the mythical sea monster that lives in the bay. The brainchild of the then five-year-old brewery owner’s daughter, the mural celebrates the fantastic and near-impossible, like craft brewers usurping the mega giants. We Are Seminole Heights

Location: Side of The Refinery (formerly known as Fodder & Shine)

Greg and Michelle Baker commissioned Pep Rally to create this mural to celebrate the up-and-coming Seminole Heights neighborhood and the independent spirit of the businesses and entrepreneurs within it. The symbolism gives a nod to the neighborhood, such as the cat and the gator, the wood grain, which represents the DIY spirit, the silhouette of the trees indigenous to the area, and the quilting that represents the unity of the area. Today there are more than 50 breweries in the greater Tampa Bay area and each one has its own take on the art of craft beer. With flavors infused with lemon, chocolate or cardamom, there’s something for everyone’s taste. And it goes without saying, but each and every beer-loving traveler will be welcomed to Tampa Bay with open arms—and full pints. Cheers to that!
